Nightlight’s Snowflakes Embryo Adoption Program believes in the inherent value and potential of every embryo.
Embryo adoption is a compassionate and life-affirming path, one that gives embryos—tiny, vulnerable human lives—a chance to be born and grow within loving families. Another one of Snowflakes’ core values is upholding the dignity and future of every human life.
1. Snowflakes accepts all embryos, regardless of quality or quantity.
Every embryo, regardless of its stage, quality, or genetic composition, deserves the opportunity to develop and thrive. Many fertility clinics only accept embryos that meet certain criteria for viability, leaving some embryos without the chance of being transferred. We firmly believe that all embryos deserve a place where they are cherished. Our commitment to accepting all embryos reflects our respect for each one’s intrinsic value, regardless of the circumstances surrounding its creation.
2. Snowflakes discourages genetic testing.
In a world increasingly focused on genetic perfection, Snowflakes discourages the genetic testing of embryos. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and pre-implantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) can lead to discarding embryos which do not meet certain standards (whether due to the presence of specific genetic markers, chromosomal makeup, or even gender). However, those embryos might be discarded prematurely. Dr. Norbert Gleicher, MD, who performed a study on PGD in 2016, estimated that only 30% of these tests show accurate results. Another peer-reviewed article showed current techniques for PGD or PGT-A have not been shown to improve live birth rates after a transfer. Discouraging genetic testing affirms our belief that the purpose of embryo adoption is not to select or reject but to protect and nurture.
3. Snowflakes prohibits selective termination.
Selective termination is a practice often seen in fertility treatments, where one or more embryos may be removed in the case of multiple pregnancies. Snowflakes is committed to the belief that each embryo adopted is a life deserving of protection and care, and we do not support any practices that would interfere with this right. When families choose to adopt, they commit to honoring the life of each embryo they welcome. This commitment fosters a culture of respect, compassion, and love.
4. Snowflakes takes steps to prevent the destruction of embryos.
Of the many embryos that are currently frozen, some have a special circumstance surrounding their creation. Maybe they were frozen more than 10 years ago, or with older technology. Maybe they were frozen at an earlier stage of development or perhaps the embryos are lower quality. The future of these embryos is uncertain, as they may face indefinite storage or destruction. We take proactive steps to offer these embryos an alternative through the Snowflakes Open Hearts Program. Through this program, we work to connect these embryos with adoptive families who are eager to open their hearts and home. By offering these embryos the chance to be adopted, we ensure that they are not left to an uncertain fate, but instead are given the opportunity for life.
Nightlight’s and Snowflakes’ mission is deeply rooted in the belief that every embryo was created for and deserves life, love, and the chance to grow.
Through accepting embryos regardless of quality or quantity, discouraging genetic testing, prohibiting selective termination, and the Open Hearts Program, we are creating a space where every life is valued and supported. In offering embryos the opportunity to be adopted, we uphold a commitment to God’s love for us, compassion, and respect for human life in its most vulnerable form.
