After having worked at Nightlight for so many years, it was surprising that I'd not yet felt a prompting or pull to adopt. However, that changed about 7 years ago when a certain child was featured in Nightlight's Wednesday's Child newsletter. Something about that little Colombian boy, Brayan (now "Bryan"), touched my heart and I reached out to the Colombia program coordinator, just for a little more information, nothing more. I learned that he was available to be hosted that year, but the timing wasn't right for our family. The following year, he was still available for hosting and I was able to convince my husband and kids that we should bring Bryan, then 12, into our home for a couple of weeks that Christmas (2017).
My husband, who had been very hesitant to even host him, knew as soon as we laid eyes on Bryan at the airport that we would adopt him. Our oldest biological son was a bit more hesitant, but our other two children decided about 5 minutes after they met Bryan that we should adopt him. For me, it became clear that he was to be our son when one of my co-workers in the Kentucky office told me another adoptive family wanted to meet him. No way was I going to introduce him to another prospective adoptive couple - he was mine! There was a lot more involved between making the decision and bringing him home for good, but for brevity, I will just use the phrase "the rest is history!" Having Bryan join our family, though not without a fair amount of challenges, has been the greatest blessing.
