How the Heart Gallery of America Works

What the Heart Gallery Is

The Home - Heart Gallery of America project is a national initiative — with chapters and partner galleries across many states — that uses professional photography and storytelling to spotlight children in foster care who are waiting for permanent families. Its mission is to raise awareness and inspire prospective parents to explore adoption or fostering.

Heart Gallery exhibits may be physical (in public spaces like libraries or galleries) and online, featuring portraits that highlight children’s personalities and interests rather than just basic facts.

Step-by-Step: Using the Heart Gallery in an Adoption Journey

1. Learn About Adoption in Your State

Before engaging with any Heart Gallery listings, you’ll need to become eligible to foster or adopt within your state’s child welfare system or through a licensed child placing agency in your state. This typically involves:

  • Attending an orientation or information session

  • Completing required training

  • Undergoing background checks

  • Completing a home study and certification/licensing

These steps are administered by your local child welfare agency or a licensed adoption service provider.

2. View Children Featured in Your Heart Gallery

Once you’re approved (licensed/certified) as a foster/adoptive family, you can view Heart Gallery portraits and profiles — locally and nationally — to learn about children who are waiting for permanency. These may include:

  • Older children and teens

  • Sibling groups

  • Children with special needs or unique histories

Heart Galleries help put a face and story to waiting children in foster care, rather than just a listing with minimal details.

3. Express Interest or Inquire

If you see a child (or children) whose story and needs align with your family, you let your adoption worker or caseworker know. They will:

  • Share your interest and home study information with the child’s worker

  • Ask questions to assess whether your family might be a good match

Important: Heart Gallery itself doesn’t place children — the match and placement are handled by the child welfare agency or adoption professional once you make an inquiry.

Many people have discovered that it is difficult to get a response from the social workers representing these children.  That's because:

  • County and state workers have large caseloads
  • If the child is healthy or under 8 years old, there could be hundreds of families interested
  • The social worker representing this child may have never done a placement like this before (with a family outside of their local foster certification)

That's where Nightlight's Anchored in Hope - Adoption from Foster Care - Nightlight program comes in: we advocate for you and get more information about the child.  We get the attention of the county or state social worker representing that child, and they trust us.

4. Matching and Getting to Know the Child

If the child’s caseworker and Nightlight feel there may be a fit:

  • You’ll receive more information about the child

  • You may have meetings, visits, or conversations arranged through the agency

  • Some families create introduction albums or letters to help children get to know them

The goal is to build trust and see if the child and family connect well.

5. Pre-Placement Visits and Placement

Once a mutual interest and compatibility are established, you typically begin a series of visits to the child's state of residence:

  • Initial short visits

  • Longer visits as comfort grows

  • Eventually, placement in your home once the team agrees

After placement, there is usually a supervision period (often months long) where social workers check in before the adoption is finalized.

6. Finalizing the Adoption

After the supervision period and once legal requirements are met, the adoption is finalized in court. The child becomes your legal and permanent family member.

Advocacy and Awareness

The Heart Gallery’s reach isn’t just online; many local communities host traveling exhibits, public viewings, and media campaigns to highlight waiting children and educate families about foster care adoption.

Photography volunteers, community partners, and adoption advocates all contribute to widening the reach of these children’s stories.

Important Things to Know

  • Heart Gallery is not a placement agency. It’s a recruitment and awareness tool that connects potential families with state or county adoption systems.  You will need an agency like Nightlight Christian Adoptions to represent you.

  • Children are typically in foster care. Profiles are meant to inspire inquiries; legal eligibility and placement decisions happen through the child welfare system.

  • Many children listed are older, part of sibling groups, or have special needs. These kids may have waited longer for a family and often need intentional matching.

  • Listings may change. Children’s circumstances can evolve — a child might get matched before a photo is updated, or legal status may change — so agencies always provide the most current information during inquiries.

In Summary

The Heart Gallery of America amplifies children’s stories through photography and community engagement, inspiring families to explore foster care adoption. It works in tandem with state child welfare systems — helping you discover waiting children that could be a right match for your family, then connecting you with the proper channels to take the next steps in a thoughtful, supportive adoption journey.
