Ultrasounds

Facing an unexpected pregnancy can be frightening. So much of your future seems unknown. If you’ve received a positive result on a pregnancy test, we suggest getting an ultrasound next.

The Purpose Of An Ultrasound

An ultrasound determines how far along you are in your pregnancy. This is vital information if you are considering abortion. Different abortion methods are determined based on the gestational age of your pregnancy.

By looking at fetal development, technicians gather critical information. An ultrasound detects a fetal heartbeat to ensure the heart is beating correctly or normally based on fetal age. Ultrasounds also determine the location of your pregnancy. While most pregnancies develop in the uterus, there is a chance that you can have an ectopic pregnancy which means the pregnancy is located outside of your uterus.

What Is An Ultrasound?

Abdominal Ultrasounds
An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of your uterus. With an abdominal ultrasound, the technician places a gel-like substance on your stomach. A small handheld instrument called a transducer is rubbed over the gel to create a picture from the sound waves echo. The echo generates a picture the technician can view to learn a variety of things about your pregnancy.

Vaginal Ultrasounds
With a vaginal ultrasound, a transducer device is placed in your vagina, which sends out sound waves and collects the reflections. A vaginal ultrasound is used mainly during early pregnancy. Ultrasound techs could use it if an abdominal ultrasound doesn’t provide enough information about your pregnancy.

Where Do I Get An Ultrasound?

At Empowered Choices, we want you to have as much information about your pregnancy as possible. The more you know, the more confident you will be in making a decision moving forward. We can provide referrals for an ultrasound scan in your local community. Very often, pregnancy resource centers offer ultrasounds for free if you’ve received a positive pregnancy test from them.

  • I was a twenty-year old working a full-time and part-time job, trying to make ends meet. I didn’t know what I was doing with my life, to be honest what twenty-year old does? When I found out I was pregnant I had so many questions running through my mind: How could I support another human being? How can I be a parent when I am still raising myself? I don’t make enough money! I decided to talk to someone about all my fears.
  • I liked how understanding everyone was. I felt cared for and supported by the entire staff. I felt informed of all my options, and I liked hearing what others had chosen, because I’d never done this before and it helped me understand.
  • I considered abortion when I first found out I was pregnant. My parents were pro-life and I didn’t really want to have an abortion but I was scared, alone, and was in a bad place. I went to a pregnancy center and then started thinking other options.
