“I always thought adoption catered more to the parents adopting and not the expectant mother. So it was nice to see and learn all of the support that actually goes towards the moms. Birth moms kind of have a bad rap so they don’t think there are people out there that support their decision and actually encourage it. My pregnancy counselor was always there for me and helped me. It’s nice to have that support system.”

The Adoption Process

Step 1
I’m Pregnant, What Are My Options?

Pregnancy counselors are available 24/7 through email, text, or phone.  We are here to listen to your story and answer any questions you may have.  There is no pressure to place your child for adoption. The decision to move forward is 100% your decision.

Step 2
Meet Face-to-Face with your Pregnancy Counselor

We will meet where you are comfortable to talk through your circumstances.  We want to understand what you wish for your future. We are here to give you information about all of your options so you can decide what is best for you and your baby. We will be a support for you as you determine the right choice for you.

Step 3
When You’re Ready to Move Forward with an Adoption Plan

You will sign initial paperwork to begin the process of creating your adoption plan. This paperwork lets us know that you want to move forward with Nightlight. It does not mean you can’t change your mind if your circumstances change.

Step 4
Support Throughout Your Pregnancy

Your pregnancy counselor will provide you with continuous emotional support according to your needs throughout your journey.  Financial support for pregnancy-related expenses is also available, depending on your specific needs.

Step 5
Searching for the Right Adoptive Family

You will share with your pregnancy counselor specific characteristics that you would like in your baby’s adoptive family.  If you are unsure, that’s okay.  You can take as much time as you need.  We want to be sure you are confident in your decision. You can choose to meet the family in person, over the phone, via Skype, or not at all.  Your pregnancy counselor will be with you every step of the way.

Step 6
Now that You’ve Chosen the Perfect Family

Your pregnancy counselor is there to help you as you determine what type of relationship you want to have with the family moving forward. You will also talk with your pregnancy counselor about your delivery and your wishes for the hospital stay.

Step 7
When the Baby Arrives

You are not alone. Your pregnancy counselor will help you navigate your time at the hospital as well as the necessary paperwork.  We are here to provide you with continued support.

Step 8
Finalizing the Adoption

Your pregnancy counselor is there to support and guide you through the legal process in your state.

Step 9
Moving Forward

Nightlight is committed to a lifelong relationship with you and the adoptive family. All of Nightlight’s adoptive families have committed to providing pictures and updates until the child is 18. You and the family may also choose to have visits throughout the child’s life.  Nightlight will continue to support you by offering free counseling services according to your needs.

The Adoption Process

Adoption is about loving your baby so much that you give them the world. It’s about being mature enough to admit you are not ready to parent, and responsible enough to choose the right family to care for your child. It allows you to create a life for you and your child that you both can live with. People used to think they would “give up their baby for adoption” but, our fifty years of experience has shown that with an open adoption, you are not giving up…you are making a loving adoption plan that you can be a part of now and in the future.
