Emergency Foster Care: What You Need to Know

In the world of foster care, emergency placements are often the first line of support for children in crisis. There is a critical role that emergency foster care plays in providing safety and stability for children during times of upheaval. Let’s take a look at what emergency foster care is, how it works, and what you need to know if you are considering becoming an emergency foster parent.

What is Emergency Foster Care and How Does it Work?

Emergency placements can happen at any time, and last for any length of time, sometimes for a matter of days, and sometimes for years.  Emergency placements are typically for children removed from their homes due to safety concerns, such as abuse, neglect, or domestic violence. However, they can also occur if a current provider is no longer able to meet the needs of children and youth in their care. When a child is removed from their home, child welfare agencies work quickly to find a suitable emergency placement. This could be with a licensed foster family or in a group home, depending on the child's needs and available placement options. Emergency foster parents receive a call from the agency and are asked to take in the child on short notice, often within hours.

Sometimes emergency placements will be for an infant child from the hospital

Nightlight Christian Adoptions Healing Homes foster care program recruits and educates potential foster care families to provide exceptional homes for children and youth in the foster care system. All clients receive training regarding the reality of (and need for) emergency placements before they decide if they are open to these types of situations.

Foster Parents receive training and support to help them navigate the challenges of caring for a child in crisis. This training covers topics such as trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, and how to work with the child's biological family and the child welfare system.

How you need to be prepared

Foster parents must be prepared to provide a safe and stable environment for a child at a moment's notice. This includes having a bedroom available for the child and being able to meet their basic needs, such as food, clothing, and medical care. It requires flexibility, patience, and a willingness to open your home and heart to a child in need. However, it can also be incredibly fulfilling to provide a safe and loving home for a child who is experiencing a crisis.

Emergency foster care is a critical component of the foster care system, and the need for families that are open to these situations is ever present. If you're considering becoming a foster parent, know that you have the opportunity to make a profound difference in the life of a child. With the right support and training from an experienced agency like Nightlight, you can provide a safe and loving home for a child in their time of need.
